20th Anniversary
On 6th of September 2011, Republic of Macedonia marked 20 years of independence from the former Yugoslavia. The celebration was a good opportunity for the government to show off its capital city renovation project - "Skopje 2014". The turning point of the celebration was a pompous opening of huge, almost 30-metres high statue of Alexander the Great - officially called as The Knight on a Horse, and not less impressive fountain. At least 200 000 people gathered on the main square of Skopje to take part in this great national holiday. Several minutes before the celebration, the national morale was extra reinforced by the winning the match against Georgia in the EuroBasket games.
